Sophie Leggatt

I make oil paintings on plywood panels, collecting source material that is united by a broad theme of immortality through image. I explore how the memory of the dead lives on through the images I collect, such as excavated mastodon bones, the World Wrestling Entertainment character 'The Undertaker’ and mediaeval battle reenactments. The images are removed from their original context and repeated, adopting the language of animation to reawaken the object. Their purposefully imperfect repetition solidifies them as ‘false replicas’, opening the images up to further re-interpretation. Using humour as a disarming tool, these obscure images animate death, ultimately exploring our fascination and interactions with the past.
