VCA Art 2024

Shannon Costa

My work invites viewers to engage in emotive idleness and consider alternative perspectives. Influenced by the transitionary state known as ‘hypnagogia’, between wakefulness and sleep, I explore themes of time and false awakening, which are integral to the locations depicted in my art. Oil on canvas is my preferred medium. This choice allows me to use dominant colour palettes to create works that confront and challenge viewers. I blend realistic representation with imaginative qualities. The detailed brushwork is designed to reveal new discoveries with each viewing. My expression encourages the audience to confront semi-consciousness, fostering empathy and curiosity. My approach celebrates confrontation and seeks to draw out undisclosed sensations. Through my art, I seek to guide others on a transitional odyssey of consciousness, inviting them to explore and reflect on their own experiences.
