Natalie H. Reed
My practice, is a representation of my lived and inherited experiences – either influenced or chosen – and how they ultimately manifest, more singularly, becoming the spectacle, of what was, what is and what could have been.
During my practice, I have examined one’s pining for the alter ego or for an ideal self, likely carved out of the ever-present spectacle. As a result, identifying such themes as spatial theatricality, identity production, object relation, absence and melancholy that are evident in the combining of private and public, past and present are consistently emerging in the practice.
In conjunction, I have looked into one’s lived and inherited experiences and how they manifest, as well as examined the production of my works being neither my lived nor inherited experiences, but alternatively producing works not even of my time, therefore, further exaggerating absence and melancholy by means of nostalgia. In turn, the spectacle of events (both past and present) has been directed by an illusion, consequently, the narrative of my work is being directed by the past and the past becomes present through the spectacle.
