Jiesen Cui
My artistic practice explores the connection between memory and individual existence. Through the medium of photography, I document landscapes to capture moments that are unplanned yet imbued with subtle emotions, transforming them into reflections on both personal and collective memory.
As an artist who grew up in China and experienced the intersection of multiple cultures, my background has deeply influenced my choice of subject matter and materials. Printing my work on rice paper is not only an homage to traditional craftsmanship but also an attempt to create a dialogue between modern imagery and historical mediums. The delicate texture of rice paper lends the images a hazy and lasting quality, echoing the fleeting and ambiguous nature of memory. This choice of medium embodies my interpretation of memory: ever-flowing, indistinct, yet deeply textured.
In these works, the scenes come together like pieces of a puzzle, tracing the footsteps of the individual across time and space, and expressing my ongoing exploration of identity, culture, and the passage of time.
