Jen Huang

A heartbreaking breakup marked the beginning of my undergraduate studies. The pain of betrayal, mixed with grievance, remorse, shame, anger, and frustration, prompted me to create a play on ‘Revenge’ that invaded my ex's life as my undergraduate career approached its end... While I am enjoying the role of a director wielding power behind the camera, the screen and a microphone, unknowingly, the experience quietly turned me into one of the loyal actors in this play, scripted by myself…

Through the language of the photographic image, I explore the complexities of personal experiences as both narrator and documentary witness. Being a child who might have otherwise been denied the right to be born through politicised family planning, I saw the world with both curiosity and cynicism. I use combinations of archival photography, text, surreptitious image-making and recording to document the complexities of intimate relationships. By re-enacting particular moments through expanded visual means, I seek to utilise multi-modal expression to actively rewrite personal oppression, pain and regret.
