I am interested in the way that pencil drawings, which have long been used as a method of under-painting or sketching, have their own syntax that is separate from these mediums, in conceptual and contemporary art. My work is influenced heavily by the realm of cinema, particularly the practice of cinematographers and how the placement of figures in a space constructs a narrative and atmosphere. Through compositions employing cinematic framing, I hope to create a dialogue about how different art histories interact and overlap with each other. To further this, I explore narrative, myth making and mythologising through drawings of Melbourne sights. In my work there is also an interplay between the personal and the impersonal and how this relates to broader culture. At what point does something become our own, if it is already deeply seeded in our cultural fabric?
