Fiona Shewan

My practice draws attention to the innate potential for poetry in everyday life. Taking an expanded approach to photography, I am interested in producing work by experimenting with materials that facilitate image making.

Whether it be lenses, that magnify and make visible; originally mined from rich calcite deposits in East Iceland or, imperfect silver crystalline structures that interact with chemicals in the darkroom process to forge images. I see photography as a process of sculpting light that is intimately connected to the earth.

I invite viewers to feel captivated and embodied by the complex and intimate relationship of matter, finding ways to express that which is unseen or overlooked, atoms and molecules that coalesce and commingle. Nothing is itself alone.
