Balance is a series of non-figurative oil paintings that explore my emotions and memories since I migrated from Hong Kong to Melbourne in 1987. I make these works reflecting on the traditions of my Chinese background, in particular calligraphic writing, printmaking, painting and drawing. I also compose music for singing and playing piano in the same way.

Paint for me becomes a physical material and the colours I choose reflect sensory emotional signals. They all come together as the artwork. I see artmaking as a never-ending curious journey with its process guiding me to experiment with new ideas and concepts, from both eastern and western art history. My aim is for my brush strokes to become an emotional dance that resonates on the surface of the canvas to engage my viewer’s senses with unpredictable moods and feelings that create a limitless sense of the sublime.
