Bella Lubcke

This project has uncovered a particular fascination with the personal diary; an unassuming space intended to record and remember a life of events. My textile works reconstruct, rearrange, and reconfigure my ever-evolving experiences and realities recorded in the safety of my diaries. Embracing traditional needlework techniques, this immersive installation drops audiences into a staging of my thoughts and feelings, spread across an array of suspended fabric pieces constructed from second-hand materials including bed sheets, clothing, tablecloths, and curtains. Each piece incorporates my personal diary entries and employ processes of mapping, encoding, and redaction to resolve tensions between revealing and concealing, between public and private, and between vulnerability and self-protection.
